From PARIS, FRANCE – live on stage – it's the return of DJ ZEBRA

As the creator of the "Zebramix" show on Oui FM – France's biggest indie rock radio station – and producer of the very popular Zebramix bootleg parties, DJ Zebra has unquestionably been a driving force in bringing mashups to France. His live mashup set at Bootie last year was legendary, and probably one of the best guest DJ sets we've ever had at the club! Zebra engages the crowd, has killer mashups in his arsenal, and really knows how to rock the party.

He's spent the past summer touring around Europe, playing in front of thousands of people at several huge European summer festivals – and now he's capping it all off by returning to San Francisco for his third annual appearance!

But before his live on-stage DJ set, he'll also be showcasing his side project, the Bootlegs Live Band, with DJ Moule – and playing with Smash-Up Derby.

At 10:45 PM SHARP! Mashup the mashup bands!
SMASH-UP DERBY vs. the BOOTLEGS LIVE BAND

French and American relations will take on a whole new meaning this Saturday when Bootie house band SMASH-UP DERBY mashes up their set with the Paris-based BOOTLEGS LIVE BAND, featuring French DJs Zebra and Moule. Their take on the "live mashup band" is markedly different than Smash-Up Derby's, as they play live instruments to pre-recorded acapella vocal tracks. Members of Smash-Up Derby will join them, and then Zebra and Moule will guest on a couple Derby mashups, mashing up French lyrics with the English ones. Two mashup bands mashing up each other's mashups – how meta can we get?

From Bordeaux, France, it's the U.S. debut of DJ MOULE

DJ MOULE has been one of our favorite mashup artists for a while now – there's probably not a single Bootie party where some of his crowd-pleasing mashups haven't been dropped – and this Saturday, he'll be doing it himself, as this popular French DJ makes his American debut. This will be his first show ever in the U.S. and we are excited to have him! He is absolutely one of France's best bootleg producers and DJs.

We are delighted to host his first American appearance!

UPSTAIRS: return to Bootie's roots in the CHERRY BAR LOUNGE

We're gonna party like it's 2003! Before most people even knew what a "mashup" was, Bootie was held on a Wednesday night at a small, struggling nightclub in SoMA called the Cherry Bar (now Annie's Social Club). Back then, if we had 150 people there, we were having a good night. But although it may have been small at the time, it was still a helluva lot of fun, with a great crowd of mashup fans. Eventually, we outgrew the space – to say it was hot with 400 people crammed in there would be an understatement – but we still can't help but feel a little nostalgic about our "roots."

So this Saturday, in the upstairs room of the DNA Lounge, we're going to relive those early days, as we do the Cherry Bar Lounge! Your resident DJs ADRIAN & the MYSTERIOUS D, PARTY BEN, and DADA – all of whom were at the very first Bootie party back in 2003 – will only be spinning mashups made before 2005, the ones we used to spin "back in the day." We'll be projecting a slide show containing over 2000 club photos taken at Cherry Bar. And if you happen to collect Bootie flyers, we'll have nearly every old Bootie flyer from the Cherry Bar days there!

Come get a taste of how it all began!

Midnight mashup show: GWENCHAEL JACKFANI & the HOLLABACK ZOMBIES

When LA performer Heathervescent performed this pre-Halloween midnight mashup show at Bootie LA last year, we just knew we had to get her and her crew up to San Francisco! So this month – just in time for Halloween – we are proud to present Gwenchael Jackfani & the Hollaback Zombies. Zombie cheerleaders? All we can tell you about the number is that this shit is B-A-N-A-N-A-S!

As always, we've got free Bootie CDs to the first 75 people and its 2 for 1 before 10:30 pm, so get there early!

Bootie Top 10 - October 2007

And with this, we finally post a Bootie Top 10 so late, that we've effectively changed our posting schedule. Instead of posting this monthly list "around the 15th of the month," we'll now be posting it as close to the 1st of the month as possible ... kinda like paying the rent, only, uh ... better!

We actually updated all the Bootie sites with this new list over a week ago, but only just now got around to actually writing about the tracks. Anyway, without further ado, here goes:

Aggro1 - Big Shot Boom Bip (Billy Joel vs. Boom Bip) - Dayton, Ohio
Unbelieveably, this somehow makes Billy Joel sound cool. If you didn't know this was Billy Joel – and if you're under the age of 25, you probably don't – you might think this was actually some new electro song about an uptown hipster club chick on coke. In actuality, the vocal is nearly 30 years old! Ah, decadence that spans the decades!

The Illuminoids - Phantom Ain't Easy (David Bowie vs. Justice) - Los Angeles
This is now the second month in a row this Justice song appears in our Top 10. What can we say, we really like it! And by pairing it with David Bowie's classic alien glam-rock opus, the Illuminoids have both updated and fulfilled the futuristic sci-fi '70s promise of "Ziggy Stardust."

King Of Pants - Detox (Amy Winehouse vs. Britney Spears) - Seattle BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
When the K.O.P. dropped this in the middle of his set at Bootie in San Francisco last month, both Adrian and Party Ben practically knocked each other down scrambling to get to the DJ booth in to find out who did it and where to get it. And this song is a reminder that you can lead horse to water, but you can't get 'er to drink ... or in this case, just the opposite! Thanks, Freddy!

DJ Le Clown - In Da Black (AC/DC vs. Scissor Sisters vs. 50 Cent) - France
Now this is the sort of juxtapositioning we like! How do you put a fresh spin on a tired AC/DC song that's been bootlegged a thousand times? Instead of plopping yet another rap over it, get the Scissor Sisters in there instead! Then, if you must use a rap vocal, say, like 50 Cent, at least make Fiddy sound like a robot. Excellent production on this!

Lobsterdust - Everybody Do It Again (Jay-Z vs. Amil vs. Missy Elliott vs. Chemical Brothers) - New York City
Another excellent bootleg from one of our favorite producers. Mysterious D was joking how at the rate Lobsterdust is putting out quality mashups, we're going to need to reserve a spot for him on every month's Top 10. We fell in love with this track at this year's Bootie BRC at Burning Man, and we must admit, it sounds particular good on a big booming sound system on the playa at 3 in the morning. And the lyrics sound like our life sometimes!

Payroll - Daft Prayer (Bon Jovi vs. Daft Prayer) - London
You never realize just how many people know every single word to this Bon Jovi song until you sneak this into the middle of a set for a drunken dance floor. Emphasis on the word "drunken." Play this too early, and everyone's embarrassed – someone might suspect that they actually like this song, and that would be too uncool! But after the right amount of cocktails, who doesn't want to scream along? "Take my hand, we'll make it, I swear..."

Pheugoo - Sympathy For The Warhols (Rolling Stones vs. Dandy Warhols) - The Netherlands
The Dandy Warhols have spent the better part of their career inadvertently apeing the Rolling Stones anyway ... so why not just take it all the way, and mash the two together? Especially when it sounds as good as this.

team9 - Britney – Dead Or Alive? (Britney Spears vs. Dead Or Alive vs. Daft Punk) - Perth, Australia
Our favorite Australian bootlegger returns to form with a mashup that miraculously makes Britney's new single listenable. "Poor old Britney," writes team9, "We could have been so good together. If she'd only asked, I could have sampled Daft Punk at least two days before Kanye. I could have done a Rihanna 'Tainted Love' stunt and used Dead Or Alive's 'You Spin Me Round' classic." Here's what Britney's new single should sound like.

Totom - Thieveshake (Kelis vs. Ministry) - France
Much of the staff at the DNA Lounge – where we do Bootie SF – love old-school industrial music such as Ministry. So when we found a simple bootleg that mashed them up with 'Milkshake,' we couldn't help but spin it out, just for the giggles. House band Smash-Up Derby found it amusing enough to cover it live. Then French bootlegger Totom heard the band play it on the Bootie webcast on the DNA Lounge web site, and thought, "I can make this better." And he did. So wrong it's right.

DJ Zebra - Got To Stand It Up (Marvin Gaye vs. The Dead 60's) - Paris BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
How do you make Marvin Gaye sound modern and hip? And how do you introduce kids today to his sublime smoove-ness? You do this. DJ Zebra comes through with a beautiful mashup that's exclusive for Bootie – just in time for his appearance at the club this month!

Bootie LA this Saturday, October 6th ... Bootie BRC photos posted ... Top 10 coming soon!

Damn, we suck.

It feels like we haven't updated this Bootie Blog in over a month – oh, right, that's because we haven't.

Ever since we got back from doing Bootie BRC at Burning Man at the beginning of September, it feels like all we've been doing is trying to play "catch-up."

Bootie LA happened without us over Labor Day weekend. DJs Paul V. and Party Ben held it down for us.

Bootie SF with Seattle guest DJ Freddy, King of Pants, was a post-playa blur, compounded by the fact that both us were fighting off bronchitis at the time.

Bootie NYC got postponed due to the fact that our venue in Manhattan was (and is) still closed for renovations – do venues ever get remodelled in a timely manner? But even that break didn't get us caught up.

This month, we're helping launch Bootie Munich in Germany. And Bootie Paris is going well ... our friend and fellow bootlegger, DJ BC from Boston, even got to spin there this past month, and we must say, we were jealous he got to play there before we did! But it's looking like we'll be there in January – a great time to travel Europe (well, at least for cheap flights!)

Bootie LA is this Saturday, October 6th, with guest DJ Mr. M

Anyway, we're back in LA this weekend, ready to rock the decks at Safari Sam's. It's been two months since we've been there and we've missed it! We've got guest DJ Mr. M from Miss Kitty's in the house as well ... so if you're in SoCal, come on out!

Bootie BRC photos are posted!

We threw two Bootie mashup parties at Burning Man this past year, one at Fandango and the other at Outpost AutoSub, and both were a blast! You can check out all the photos HERE.

Bootie Top 10 coming soon -- we promise!

We are now so far behind in posting the Bootie Top 10 – our monthly list of our favorite mashup downloads – that we've now ended up missing the month of September entirely. DOH!

We were going to set a new rule for ourselves, and start posting on the 1st of every month – sure, some tracks on the list won't be quite as "right now," but at least this way, many of the tracks will have been "floor-tested" at each of the Bootie parties from the previous month.

Of course, it's now October 4th, and we still haven't posted the Top 10 yet. Like I said, we suck. We're still arguing about a few of them, and frankly, there haven't been very many "wow" tracks recently. But anyway, sit tight. The Bootie Top 10 is coming soon.

As well as the long-awaited Bootie podcast! Stay tuned...
